Dangerous Vans Two rollovers involving 15-passenger vans in 2010 brought attention to how dangerous these vehicles are. The 15-passenger van, which is widely used by churches, schools, scout troops, day care centers and hotels, is one of the most dangerous vehicles on the road. Ford, GM and Chrysler all make a version of this van which is designed like any other van except that they have been lengthened to hold more passengers. The trouble is that when the extra riders are put on board, the van is three times more likely to roll over in an emergency. The problem is exacerbated when luggage and other cargo are added. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a statement which noted that the 2010 crashes raised questions as to whether the 15-passenger vans, especially when fully loaded, are unusually susceptible to rollover. The NHTSA found that the risk of rollover increases by as much as 85% with ten or more passengers. I am sure that most of us can remember the tragic crash in 2002 when 13 Guatemalan and Honduran workers were drowned when a 15-passenger van rolled over off a bridge in northern Maine. It is still common to see these vans on our highways today, and one can only hope that they will be driven with extra care.
