The nation’s blood supply As a result of multiple violations of federal laws regarding blood collection the American Red Cross has been fined $16 million by the Federal Drug Administration. According to the F.D.A. the Red Cross failed to meet government standards in 2008 and 2009 by mislabeling blood, failing to record complete information about donors and potential air contamination.
It is rather disconcerting to think that the keeper of our nation’s blood supply is falling short in a providing a reliable and safe system which must, of needs, be relied upon by everyone who requires a transfusion because of surgery or traumatic injury. On the other hand it is heartening to know that our government is on top of the situation and is making sure that strict standards are adhered to.
